2009 (was: 2008 CRA Undergraduate Awards)

Post by pan »

"Nominations for CRA's 2008 Outstanding Undergraduate Award program,
recognizing undergraduate students who show outstanding research
potential in an area of computing research, are due on October 15,

  1. The 2008 award program is sponsored by Mitsubishi Electric
    Research Labs.

A hard copy of the nomination information and a flier to post were
mailed to department chairs on August 17. Information is also
provided below and is posted on CRA's website
http://www.cra.org/Activities/awards/un ... ion08.html

To be eligible, nominees must attend a university or college located
in North America, and must be nominated by two faculty members and
recommended by the chair of their home department. No more than two
male and two female candidates can be recommended by the same
department in the same year.

The awards committee looks for demonstrated excellence of computing
research ability. The type of department in which the student is
majoring and the area of computing in which the student has
demonstrated ability are immaterial. What is important is the quality
of the research work done by the student. The awards committee also
considers the student's academic record and service to the community.
Preference is given to students in their senior year (or the
equivalent).

A cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded to each of two undergraduate
students, one female and one male. A small number of other
outstanding candidates will be recognized as Runners-Up and
Finalists. All nominees whose work is considered to be exemplary are
recognized with Honorable Mentions.

The awards will be presented at one of the major computing research
conferences sponsored by CRA, ACM, the IEEE Computer Society, SIAM,
AAAI, or USENIX. The two first-prize winners will receive financial
assistance from CRA toward their travel to the conference. CRA will
also sponsor a departmental reception for the two winners at their
home institutions.

Nomination forms and complete documentation (6 collated copies--see
below) must reach CRA no later than October 15, 2007. Results will be
announced by December 3, 2007.

We urge you to make this award widely known among faculty in your
department. The award is a terrific way to recognize your best
students and your department.

We would really like to nominate some of our best and brightest CSc
students for these awards. Please could you get back to me or Nigel
as soon as possible if you have any undergraduate students in your
classes, or from last year's classes, or students who had Summer
USRFs, etc. who you feel worthy of a nomination. The deadline for
the nominations is October 14 but we would need information before
that so we could prepare the nomination package.

Thanks.

beyond classroom or internship projects. Past winners have
contributed key ideas to research projects, published papers in

multiple projects, or done work that resulted in patents or
    patent applications.

Also considered are:

  • Outstanding academic record, and
  • Service to the computing or broader community. Past winners have
been mentors, tutors, or teaching assistants; officers in student
organizations; volunteers in community-service organizations; or
managers of computer labs or websites.
