VANIER CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS
FALL 2010 COMPETITION

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) Program provides $50,000 per year for three years to Canadian and International students who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies and are currently pursuing a doctoral program, or intend to pursue, in the following year, doctoral studies in one of the areas of the natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities or health. Please note that students must be invited to apply for a Vanier CGS by the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Victoria. On behalf of the University, the Faculty of Graduate Studies Vanier Adjudication Committee will forward a limited number of nominations (as determined by the tri-councils) for competition at the national level.

Agency-specific interdisciplinary selection committees will review all nominations received through the universities. Each committee will recommend 70 top-ranked candidates to the Vanier Selection Board who will make the final recommendations for Vanier CGSs based on the board’s assessment of the leadership abilities of the candidates put forward.

Please note that unsuccessful Vanier nominees no longer receive a CGSD award automatically. Those eligible should apply for doctoral funding through the appropriate tri-council doctoral funding competition as well.

NEW-At the conclusion of the last competition, the Vanier Selection Board noted that Vanier Scholarships should be used as a unique recruitment tool both internationally and within Canada to help connect Canada to the global pool of knowledge, talent and ideas. Therefore, beginning this competition, nominations for compelling cases of students pursuing studies at the same university where their previous degrees were obtained will be accepted by the Vanier Board, but these should be the exception and not the rule.

Vanier results will be announced April 2011.

The Vanier Process at UVic

1.To facilitate the invitational process, academic units at UVic are asked to provide the Faculty of Graduate Studies with the name of one top-ranked student to be considered for a Vanier CGS. The enclosed nomination form and supporting documentation must be used to submit the nomination.

2.The Faculty of Graduate Studies will confirm the student’s eligibility and contact the student to invite them to submit their application for a Vanier CGS.

3.The Faculty of Graduate Studies Vanier Adjudication Committee will review the applications and decide which students are to be recommended to the tri-councils for consideration at the national level.

Nominations for students to be considered for the invitational process must be received by the Faculty of Graduate Studies no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, September 10, 2010.
